Block Entertainment has branched out from Diddy’s Bad Boy Records, and has announced plans to team up with Capitol Records to release the first project from up-and-coming Atlanta rapper Kollosus.

“Block Entertainment is a force to be reckoned with in the hip hop arena; they have continuously churned out undeniable hip hop stars,” Leonard Brooks, SVP Urban A&R, EMI Music said in a press release. “As we grow Capitol’s urban roster, this association with Block Entertainment makes perfect sense. We are excited to sign Kollosus as well; he has a skillful flow that reflects his years growing up in Atlanta and his Jamaican-born roots. He has a unique sense of street swagger with a global appeal.”

Kollosus plans on dropping his debut in spring of next year. He recently released his street single, “Settin Standards” with fellow ATL rapper Gucci Mane.

In the past Block has put out several albums on Bad Boy including projects by Boyz N da Hood, Gorilla Zoe and Yung Joc.

Yet last May, Joc revealed to gyantunplugged.com that he had plans to sue the label, founder Russell “Block” Spencer and Bad Boy for unpaid advances and royalties. As of press time there has been no updates on the suit.

Mendengar kabar bahwa Snoop Dogg berencana mengajak Noel Gallagher untuk menggarap album bersama, segera saja Jay Z memasang kuda-kuda untuk berkolaborasi dengan Liam Gallagher. Jay Z yakin kolaborasi mereka bakal sukses besar karena ia sempat membuat proyek 'impossible' seperti ini dan berjalan dengan baik.

"Saya dengar Snoop Dogg akan bekerja sama dengan Noel. Jika benar maka dengan senang hati saya akan berkolaborasi dengan Liam. Musik mereka sangat 'rapat' dan saya yakin kami bisa menggabungkan musik kami dengan baik," ungkap Jay Z seperti dikutip dari FemaleFirst.

Walaupun terdengar mustahil untuk menggabungkan musik Oasis dengan musik hip-hop Jay Z namun sejarah membuktikan bahwa kolaborasi seperti ini bukan tidak mungkin. "Waktu saya bekerja sama dengan Linkin Park tidak ada orang yang percaya kalau itu akan berhasil tapi nyatanya kami berhasil meraih sukses dengan kolaborasi itu. Hal yang sama bisa saja terjadi pada Liam," lanjutnya dengan yakin.

Sejauh ini, ide kolaborasi itu memang baru ada di angan-angan Jay Z namun bisa saja itu benar-benar terjadi karena dengan keluarnya Noel dari Oasis maka masa depan grup Inggris ini masih belum jelas dan peluang untuk side project jadi lebih terbuka buat Liam.

NEWS: Hip-Hop Legend Mr. Magic Passes Away

Seminal New York radio personality Mr. Magic reportedly passed away earlier this morning from a heart attack.

Magic, born John Rivas, was the first on air disc jockey to have a hip-hop show on a major radio station. “Rap Attack,” on WBLS-FM, debuted in 1983 and along with helping to introduce hip-hop music to the mainstream, it is credited as the birthplace of the Juice Crew. Group leader, Marley Marl was featured on Magic’s show as the DJ and Tyron “Fly Ty” Williams was the producer.

DJ Premier issued a statement about Magic and his legacy earlier today. “I want to send out the utmost respect and condolences to the memory of John Rivas aka Mr. Magic,” the producer wrote. “He paved the way for all radio stations that ever did mixshows.”

“He was known for his direct and sarcastic attitude on the air and every artist wanted his approval when it came to breaking new records,” Preemo continued. “He even had songs dedicated to him by the legendary Whodini (”Magic’s Wand”)…Rest in Peace Mr. Magic.”

Outside of radio, Magic produced tracks the Force MD’s and put out several compilation albums. Later on in life he had a rap channel on popular video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Bagi Henry Foundation, istilah 'salin-tempel' (copy-paste) tidak saja mencerminkan prinsip dasar dari seluruh proses kreasinya. Lebih dari itu, 'salin-tempel' telah menjadi ideologi yang menyemangati jaman di mana kita hidup. Hari -hari ini, ketika segala macam informasi selalu tersedia di depan mata dan bisa diakses dengan sangat mudah, pemahaman kita tentang dunia pun sesungguhnya telah berubah. Kini seorang seniman tak lagi mungkin mencipta dari titik nol, karena tak mungkin menolak informasi yang mengepungnya. Proses aktualisasi diri kemudian menyerupai tindakan mengenakan pakaian, yang selalu dibatasi oleh pilihan-pilihan yang ada. Pernyataan eksistensi tak lebih dari sekedar pose-pose dalam sebuah sesi pemotretan. Inilah pokok-soal yang ingin dinyatakan oleh Henry. Namun, tanpa tendensi untuk menyatakan kritik, karya-karyanya dalam pameran ini menyodorkan persoalan identitas seniman dengan cara yang santai dan menyenangkan.

Henry Foundation setelah menyelesaikan pendidikan seni grafis di Institut Kesenian Jakarta di tahun 2000 banyak melakukan eksplorasi seni dengan beragam media, dari grafis, performance art, interactive, video hingga berbagai proyek musik.
Selain terlibat di banyak proyek seni rupa bersama ruangrupa, Henry Foundation juga bekerja sebagai video director bersama Anggun Priambodo lewat bendera The Jadugar, yang kemudian memberi referensi baru bagi estetika seni video musik di Indonesia melalui karya video mereka untuk band-band seperti LAIN, The Brandals, Naif, dan Boys R’ Toys. Henry Foundation yang akrab dipanggil dengan nama Batman juga dikenal sebagai vokalis dari Goodnight Electric - band electronic pop yang telah merilis 2 album. Sampai sekarang Henry Foundation bekerja secara independen sebagai graphic designer dan video director, dan juga kerap bekerja memeriahkan pesta-pesta di club-club ibu kota dan acara-acara musik anak muda sebagai DJ.

Kali ini lewat pameran tunggalnya yang kedua berjudul copy-paste extraordinaire, Henry Foundation kembali ke dunia seni rupa untuk menampilkan karya-karya terbarunya dalam media lukis dan grafis di RURU Gallery.

Melihat industri musik Indonesia saat ini itu seperti melihat gerbong kereta api yang sedang melaju di depan kita, hanyalah rentetan gerbong-gerbong yang mirip dan berulang. Musisi-musisi yang muncul pun demikian, hanyalah rentetan musisi yang mirip dengan apa yang telah sukses beberapa waktu sebelumnya. Akan tetapi, beberapa pihak telah mencoba untuk keluar dari gerbong ini dan mencoba jalur musik yang telah lama ada, yaitu musik Hip-Hop.
Geliat tumbuhnya minat pasar terhadap musik Hip Hop ini terlihat menarik lembaga pengarah artis Republik Cinta Management (RCM). Setelah sukses melejitkan musisi baru seperti Mulan Jameela, Andra & The Backbone dan MahaDewi, mereka menggaet dua rapper, Irwan Suwandi dan Amank Syamsu.

Sejauh ini, RCM telah menyandingkan mereka dengan artis lainnya. Keduanya menemani vokal MahaDewi dengan rap di empat buah lagu dalam album "Dewi Cinta". The Law sendiri muncul di lagu The Rock dan beberapa remix lagu lawas Dewa19. RCM melibatkan mereka pada berbagai tur di Indonesia dan Malaysia, sementara dalam acara musik peringatan kemerdekaan RI Agustus lalu di Sydney, The Law turut bersama artis RCM lainnya menghibur orang Indonesia yang menetap di sana.

Irwan "The Law" Suwandi sendiri sebenarnya sudah tergolong "pemain lama" dalam tataran komunitas. Pada akhir tahun 1990-an pernah tergabung dalam sebuah grup yang mengisi album kompilasi Pesta Rap yang meledak kala itu. Sesudah menurunnya minat pasar pada musik rap di awal 2000an, simpatisan Dewa 19 ini berhenti. Untuk sementara waktu, ia menjadi produser musik yang membantu menyediakan musik demo bagi rapper pemula. Kini Irwan tengah menyelesaikan album pertamanya dibawah kontrak tiga tahun RCM, untuk dua album. "Saya juga sempat ngobrol-ngobrol dengan mas Dhani, dia rencananya mau bikin kompilasi lagi, tapi musik rap."

Tentu bicara tentang Hip Hop di Indonesia, kita tak boleh mengesampingkan komunitas yang ada di dalamnya.

Sebagai tambahan, menurut The Law dan Amank, Justru seiring menurunnya minat pasar terhadap Hip Hop di awal dekade 2000, komunitas Hip Hop banyak muncul dan tersebar di pelosok Indonesia. Bergerak pada tataran bawah tanah, komunitas ini berpusat di kota-kota besar yang memanfaatkan perkembangan teknologi musik digital dan internet untuk kemudahan produksi dan berkomunikasi satu sama lain. Acara demi acara dilangsungkan dari dan untuk anggota komunitas dengan nama berbeda, yang sebagian besar mengusung unsur kedaerahan.

Alasan Irwan bergabung dengan RCM, adalah agar musiknya dapat dibungkus bagus dan terjual kepada masyarakat luas -sesuatu yang sulit terjadi bila ia masih bersikeras di tataran komunitas. "Kalau komunitas rap pasti di situ-situ aja. Kalau bikin album hiphop yang beli, ya anak hiphop."

Ia dan Amank menambahkan bahwa sekarang memang banyak bibit musisi Hip Hop Indonesia yang potensial, namun pada akhirnya berhenti karena tidak tahu cara menjualnya. "Kalau sesuatu (musik) dibuat bagus, orang pasti akan denger, Tapi tidak cuma sampai di situ. Dipasarinnya juga harus bagus. Dimanage juga harus bagus," begitu menurut The Law perihal bagaimana harusnya musik rap dibawa.

Citra bahwa produk dari komunitas rap yang tidak professional dan tidak diatur dengan baik, seakan dijawab oleh berdirinya Platinum Music (PM) di Jakarta.

Berbeda dengan RCM yang sepenuhnya berangkat dari orientasi bisnis, PM lahir dari kecintaan dan hobi terhadap budaya urban asal Amerika Serikat ini. Hip Hop menurut mereka, lebih dari sekedar rap, dapat berbentuk wacana puitis untuk menyatakan isi pikiran.

Ketiga pendiri perusahaan rekaman dan manajemen artis ini, Yudha, Dimas dan Taufan bercita-cita mengangkat bakat-bakat asal komunitas dan ke muka publik di Indonesia. "Kita gak peduli backgroundnya seperti apa," menurut salah satu produser PM, Yudha. "Selama bakatnya terbilang luar biasa, PM akan menggaet mereka," tegasnya.

Selain menggaet artis independen yang sudah ternama, PM juga menggelar audisi pencarian bakat. Antusiasme anggota komunitas terlihat dari jumlah peserta yang banyak. "Di Jakarta, yang dateng 20-25 grup. Yang luar biasa di Bandung, itu proses hanya dua hari dengan promosi radio-suratkabar sama komunitas, itu yang dateng sekitar 300 orang atau sekitar 38 grup," jelas Yudha.

Distribusi PM sendiri terbilang agak berbeda. Selain melalui toko rekaman, mereka condong memasarkan musik mereka secara hand-to-hand. Yudha juga menjelaskan bahwa penggemar setia artis-artis mereka juga akan menjadi target pasar yang sangat penting, selain penjualan yang menyasar pendengar berusia 15-30 tahun.

PM pun turut memanfaatkan dampak internet dengan memasarkan lewat outlet media populer seperti Facebook, Twitter, Reverbnation, Imeem, Myspace, Kaskus. Diakui PM bahwa memang mereka lebih konsentrasi pada penjualan RBT. "Kita melihat kenyataan aja, penjualan CD sekarang jatuh. Beda dengan RBT yang orang denger, terus cari," sambut Yudha.

Untuk mendukung artis-artis yang mereka kontrak, PM memberikan dorongan yang terbilang luar biasa untuk sebuah perusahaan rekaman yang masih muda. "PM itu mungkin, yang pertama kali ya, kita ga pernah men-charge artis kita." tutur Yudha. "Baik itu untuk rekaman, proses mixing, bahkan tiket dan akomodasi bagi artis asal luar Jakarta sepenuhnya ditanggung oleh PM. Kita juga ngurusin masalah kostum dan latihan."

"Mereka memang benar Professional," sergah Andari, rapper yang dinaungi PM. "Mulai dari kita proses recording albumnya selama ini, saya baru tau gimana lagu saya diubah sama produser yang kerjanya sama Warren G. Buat saya sebagai rapper itu suatu kehormatan." Menurut artis bernama panggung Ndeesaster ini, PM juga mampu membuat musisi yang belum punya album seperti dirinya dapat banyak kesempatan manggung, termasuk di acara besar seperti Earth Fest tahun lalu.

Kehadiran Greg Satriano yang disinyalkan Andari, memang menandakan keseriusan lainnya yang ditunjukkan PM. Mereka menggunakan Greg karena ingin standar musik mereka dapat merujuk nama mereka Platinum, "better than gold", menurut Yudha.
Produser asal West Coast amerika yang sebelumnya juga telah bekerja dengan Snoop Dogg, dan Lil' John ini, akan membantu PM mengerjakan proses album kompilasi siap rilis mereka, Hip Hop United.

Album ini akan hadir untuk memperkenalkan penggiat-penggiat tenar dari komunitas Hip Hop di Indonesia, yang PM pilih untuk dipertemukan pada pasar pendengar. Tantangan terbesarnya menurut mereka adalah, banyak artis-artis yang sudah terkenal sebelumnya lebih mengikuti selera pasar, yakni bercampur pop dan dangdut. "Kami Ingin coba bawa hip hop yang masih bisa didengar, tapi tetap Hip Hop," seru Andari, yang mengusung musik Alternative Hip Hop ini.

"Intinya melawan arus. Kita juga tidak terlalu ekstrim, idealis untuk bawa lagu hiphop underground ato apalah. Kita pengen diterima dulu di masyarakat," tambah Yudha, yang menerangkan bahwa di isi album ini akan ada silang dengan berbagai musik seperti Rock, Jazz, Funk, Downtempo dan Lounge

PM akan melepas album Hip Hop United setelah bulan Ramadhan. Selaras nama albumnya, "United", PM mengajak mengajak para penggiat musik Hip Hop bersama-sama menggebrak permukaan, dibandingkan jalan sendiri-sendiri, seperti filosofi lidi.

Keoptimisan ini didasari sambutan terhadap musik Hip hop belakangan ini. "Artis hiphop kita (Indonesia) naik. Bisa jadi kedepannya Hip Hop naik semua. Soalnya dimana-mana Hip Hop nomer satu tangga lagu, Singapore, Hongkong, Beijing, Thailand. Sesuatu yang mungkin," sebutnya.

Sejauh ini, Queen Latifah sudah punya 25 jadwal di 25 kota yang berbeda dan ia ingin di akhir nanti ia bisa membentuk satu grup rap cewek atau setidaknya ada satu rapper cewek yang berhasil menekuni karir di dunia rap.

NEWS: Details Emerge in DJ AM’s Death

DJ AM, 36, the celebrity spinmaster who was born Adam Goldstein, was found dead of an apparent drug overdose yesterday afternoon (August 28) in his Manhattan apartment.

According to the New York Daily News, authorities found a half-empty bag of crack under AM’s deceased body along with a crack pipe. Investigators also found several bottles of prescription medications used to treat anxiety on his kitchen counter.

In previous interviews AM told reporters he had been sober for eleven years after battling a severe drug addiction in his early twenties. He was working on a show with MTV called Gone Too Far along with Eminem’s manager Paul Rosenberg - who served as the show’s executive producer - where he helped to stage interventions for troubled teens. The fate of the show is unclear at press time.

Just last year AM was involved in a tragic plane crash with friend and musical collaborator Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker. They were the only survivors in the accident; two crew members and two other passengers died.

AM had extensive ties to the hip-hop community. Throughout his career as a DJ he had worked with Jay-Z, Will Smith and Madonna as well as forming a group with Barker called TRV$DJAM that perfomed as a house band for last years MTV Video Music Awards, where he backed up such acts as Kid Cudi and Lupe Fiasco. DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Drama, ?uestlove, Alchemist, DJ Premier and DJ A-Trak were among the friends that expressed their condolences to him on their Twitter accounts.

As of press time plans for his burial are unknown.
